Glacier and permafrost hazards in high mountain areas - International workshop, Vienna, 10-13th November 2009

Prof. John M. Reynolds, RIL, attended this workshop held at BOKU University in Vienna and presented an invited keynote lecture on 'Criteria for hazard assessment'. The outcome of the conference is likely to be a report in EOS but also stimulated much important debate about the management of these hazards in the light of ongoing climate change. Prof. Reynolds was also asked to oversee the development of new guidelines for the assessment of glacial and permafrost hazards in high mountains. Further details of this workshop can be found at www.baunat.boku.ac.at/workshop09.html. This meeting was held under the auspices of the Glacier and Permafrost Hazards (GAPHAZ) Working Group of the International Association for the Cryospheric Sciences (IACS) and the International Permafrost Association (IPA).
