The development of an innovative approach to glacial hazard research and management resulted in several noteable achievements for RGSL:
- Publication of international guidelines for glacial risk managment (see RIL's DFID project homepage)
- Co-founders of the Glacier and Permafrost Hazards (GAPHAZ) working group
- The first use of commercially available geophysical equipment for glacial hazard assessment in the Himalayas

- The first compilation of an inventory of glaciers and glacial lakes throughout Bhutan for hazard assessment
